Personalising learning

This website – and the leadership for personalising learning framework and practical case studies that it is built on – will help you make personalising learning real in your school.

Central to the website is a new Leadership for Personalising Learning Framework, written and developed by Professor John West-Burnham for NCSL. While much has been written on personalising learning, this is the first time that its implications for leaders and leadership have been brought together in this way.

Drawing together the key messages from a range of educational thinkers, the framework focuses on and extends what is already known about how effective school leadership can be used to embed personalisation within the practice of schools.

The website is structured around the framework with videos, case studies and activities for you and your team available throughout. The main sections of the site are listed below. More information on the content and features of this site can be found on the How to use this site page.

Why personalise learning?

Personalising learning is not just another initiative. It provides a powerful opportunity to focus on the core purpose of schools – the quality of the learning of every individual.

What is personalising learning?

Personalised learning is much more than a portfolio of effective teaching and learning strategies focused on the individual. It is primarily about an ethos or culture that is expressed through three pivotal areas – key components of personalising learning, management for personalising learning and leadership for personalising learning.
