Be a head programme

NPQH graduates: practical support for headship applicants

Wherever you are on your career path, the Be a head programme can provide the support you need to help you progress towards headship, at the time you need it most. With regular newsletters, comprehensive information packs, a chance to put your questions to a headteacher about the role, and in-depth online support, this free programme can provide you with a wealth of information to help you progress with confidence.

Advice by email

You can email your questions or queries about the process of applying for headship to [email protected], and we will reply with advice and tips to support you.

We will also give you advance notice of discussions in NCSL’s talk2learn community on headship recruitment and selection, where we will be inviting a recruitment consultant to take the hot seat.

Regular newsletters relevant to your stage of the journey

Throughout the year we will send you our Heads up newsletter through the post or via email, according to your preference. Each issue will be specifically targeted to the stage you are on your journey to headship. Whether it’s the application process, finding out how to research a potential school or case studies of those who are already headteachers, there will always be something relevant. That’s why taking a couple of minutes to complete the survey is so important.

Getting you ready – online help whenever you need it for every stage

We know that a considerable percentage of headship positions are advertised at a specific time of the year. To ensure that you’re ready to apply for them, we will send you a comprehensive pack of information well in advance, containing everything you need to go ahead with confidence.

The pack includes leaflets which take you through each step of the headship application and selection process, from deciding on the kind of school you might like to lead, completing your application form, what governors will be looking for, interview tips and techniques and so much more.

Advice and support from those already in headship

NPQH graduates who want to progress to headship have told us that speaking to a headteacher would be a great help to their career. NCSL’s Talk to a head telephone service gives you one-on-one contact with someone who has already been through the headship selection process.

The informal sessions are an easy way to discuss any area of headship. Graduates who have used the service either via a telephone conversation or face-to-face chat have found it particularly helpful and informative.
