The revised National Standards for Headteachers were published in September 2004, following consultation with teachers, headteachers, professional and subject associations, local authorities, higher education institutions and others from both inside and outside education. The Standards recognise the key role that headteachers play in engaging in the development and delivery of government policy and in raising and maintaining levels of attainment in schools in order to meet the needs of every child.

The National Standards for Headteachers reminds us that "the effective headteacher develops a personal coherent model to fit the context in which (s)he is working".
NCSL has worked closely with school leaders across the varying school contexts to create a series of focus pieces looking at how the National Standards for Headteachers have been contextualised by school leaders. The pieces are intended to be a helpful resource for school leaders, offering ideas and possible ways forward for schools trying to match up the National Standards with their individual context.
