The resources listed on this page are designed to help you determine whether you are ready to apply for the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) and to take the step up to headship. If you are considering applying for NPQH, we strongly recommend that you look at the resources on this page and spend some time discussing your readiness with your headteacher or line manager.
NPQH is underpinned by the National Standards for Headteachers. These standards are divided into six key areas which, when taken together, represent the role of the headteacher. Within each key area, knowledge requirements, professional qualities and actions are identified. The NPQH application process and assessment framework are based on the standards, so it is essential that you familiarise yourself with them.
This diagnostic tool is based on the six key areas of the National Standards for Headteachers and is designed to help you consider your own knowledge, understanding, commitment and experience against each of the areas. It aims to help you determine any gaps in your own knowledge and experience that you may need to priorities. It should also help you reach an overall view about whether or not you are ready to apply for NPQH.
