Financial Management in SchoolsFinancial management > Reference

ref_library_title.gif

This online resource is designed to provide an easy reference guide to a range of resources available to support financial management in schools. Many of the documents included can be downloaded from the internet; links have been referenced. Several of the publications are from the DfES, including the Financial Management Standard and Toolkit, which was developed in association with the Institute of Public Finance (IPF).

Supporting the toolkit is a set of standards, which can be found in the standard section of this library. These enable schools to assess the soundness and effectiveness of their own financial systems and identify what they need to do to improve them. They enable schools to link through to documents in the toolkit that will be of most use to their particular situation. The best way to use these resources is to go through the standards evaluation tool first and then access those documents from the toolkit that deal with any areas of comparative weakness.

The reference library is designed for headteachers and other senior leaders in schools Headteachers , governors, particularly those on finance committees Governors , and bursars, including school finance officers, school accounting officers and financial directors Bursars.

Governance and accountability

This section deals not only with an overview of the roles of governors and headteachers and the legal requirements, but also contains some useful exemplars of good practice and forms for use in the annual report to parents. There is guidance on the principles of best value. There are a number of brief, helpful documents available that have been commissioned by the DfES, which support headteachers and governing bodies in holding themselves and others to account. Relevant standards for governance and accountability are: leadership and governance, and people management.

This section is mainly targeted at governors and headteachers, but also contains useful information for those charged with managing the school finances.
